GAP Ireland is linked with Global Action Plan International, an organisation founded in 1992 to involve everyday people in creating solutions to environmental problems.

GAP is a network of national and in some cases local organisations working for a common goal to empower people to live increasingly sustainably.

Each member organisation is an independent entity with full responsibility for designing and delivering appropriate programmes, and for its own funding and financial management.

Alignment of purpose and methods is through an exchange of experience. The international secretariat also analyses results of the member organisations and acts as a repository for the growing body of knowledge and theory concerning empowerment, as well as a cross-pollinator through workshops and other events.

In some countries the member organisation has state or other public funding as a basis. In others, grants are the major funding source. In yet others, all or most funding is through contracts.

Global Action Plan is located in 17 countries around the world including;  Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, UK, Ireland, Poland, Estonia, Russia, Latvia, Li
thuania, Ukraine, Korea and USA.

GAP International offers a variety of courses to member organisations and, occasionally, to non-members. Some examples:

  • Design of empowering programmes
  • Adapting an existing programme to a new language and culture
  • Empowering coaching – principles and practice
  • Models and methods for sustainable project management
  • Transformative Leadership (with Futures Invention Associates)
  • Synergy effects in the work-place (with Fleck Consulting AB)
The main building block of GAP programmes is the ´Eco Team´, known in Ireland as the ´Action Team´.
