The Garden Action Teams comprise of four neighbours or residents that live in the same area. It is a basic gardening course that runs for 7 weeks facilitated by a GAP gardener. Each week the team work in each team-members garden and a different gardening topic is discussed.
The topics covered include,
- garden planning
- soil maintenance
- plant categories
- plant maintenance
- organic control of garden pests
- companion planting and composting
As well as covering the above topics residents get an opportunity to design, develop and manage their own gardens with the expert advice of a trained horticulturalist. An organic approach to gardening is promoted underlying the philosophy of 'working with nature rather then against it'.
As the course is run in residents homes it is very informal allowing an opportunity to bond and get to know each other. Also because of the emphasis on working together there is a strong sense of cooperation in teams. Therefore not only is this course informing the residents about their gardens, it's also providing a way for residents to get to know each other too.
How Can Garden Action teams Help You?
By completing a Garden Action team you will get essential garden know-how that will help you in the years to come. Participation in the course also entitles you to a range of plants specifically suited to your garden conditions. In addition you receive two bags of organic compost to enrich the soil in your garden.
The Garden Action team gives you a chance to get to know your neighbours and work with them in developing your garden. It also provides a springboard to forming community links or larger gardening groups with a view to improving the surroundings outside your own garden
and communal areas. We are always recruiting more teams so if you are interested in signing up just call and ask for Sinéad or Brenda.
