About Ballymun
Ballymun lies on the north of Dublin city centre and has the distinction of being the largest high-rise public housing complex ever built in the south of Ireland. The estate consists of a mix of 2,814 flats in 4-, 8-, and 15- storey blocks along with 2,400 houses. At the time of there build the flats in Ballymun were seen as an answer to a severe housing crisis in Dublin city centre. However over the years a complex web of social problems coupled with a consistent lack of investment in the maintenance and development of
Ballymun led to serious degeneration of the environment.
In 1997 Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL) was established with a commitment to not only regenerate the housing stock but to work toward the creation of a social, economic and environmentally sustainable town and community.
As part of the regeneration BRL commisioned a booklet recording the history of Ballymun to date, click here to download the booklet.
