Ten ways to save energy in your home
- Turn off you TV rather then leave it on stand by - equipment on stand by uses 20% of the energy it would use when fully on
- Walk or cycle instead of driving short distances - By not driving a 3 km journey, twice weekly you can save €30 annually.
- Turning your heating down by 1 celsius - Turning your thermostat down by 1 degree will take 10% off your heating bill and save you on average €153 annually.
- Buy A rated kitchen appliances - Appliances are graded from A - G on how energy efficient they are. A appliances use considerably less electricity and can save you €14 annually.
- Use energy efficient light bulbs (CFL's) instead of traditional bulbs in your home - Although they cost more by replacing 3 ordinary bulbs in your home you can save €37 annually and since they last longer you won't need to buy a new bulb as quickly.
- Insulate your attic - Attic insulation keeps the heat in your home for longer and by saving you approx €270 annually pays for itself in less then 2 years.
- Fit a lagging jacket - Putting an insulating jacket around your hot water tank will keep the water warmer for longer and save you €69 annually.
- Don't overfill your kettle - By boiling only as much water as you need you are saving energy and water.
- Check your radiators for thermostatic radiator valves (TRV's) - This allows you to control the heat of the radiator in each room and regulate the heating of your home more efficiently. It is estimate that TRV's can save you up to €77 annually.
- Support renewable energy initiatives in your local community.
If you were to adopt all of the tips above you could save up to €750 every year as well as significantly reducing the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere.
