Bio Fuels = BioEnergy

What is BioEnergy?

Bioenergy is energy derived from organic material.  In essence bioenergy is theconventional_biofuels_1-2 utilisation of solar energy making it possible for plants to grow (through the process of photosynthesis). Bioenergy is therefore a renewable energy resource.

What is Biomass?
Biomass is all organic material, such as plant matter.

Types of biomass that are used to provide bioenergy include:

  • wastes streams, including residues from forestry and related industries
  • recycled wood
  • agricultural residues and agrifood effluents
  • manures
  • the organic fraction of municipal solid waste
  • separated household waste and sewage sludge
  • purpose grown energy crops including short rotation forestry, miscanthus grass, etc.

What is Biofuel?
Biofuel is a term used for biomass which is being used to provide bioenergy .

Biofuel can be either:

  • solid biofuel (e.g. firewood)
  • liquid biofuel (e.g. oil produced for oilseed rape, which can be used as a vehicle fuel).

Why is it good to use BioEnergy?

Two major benefits for Bioenergy in Ireland are;

  1. Bioenergy are carbon neutral (carbon neutral means that they do not relesase any extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as the growing period of the biocrop consumes carbon during its growing phase)
  2. Bioenergy crops can generaly be grown in Irleand which reduces our         dependance on imported fossil fuels.
