Do you really need to use the car?

Short journey's under 3 km cause the most pollution because for each short journey the car engine has to warm up. This is when the most pollution is produced. Could you walk or hop on a bike instead? It will cost you less and you will also get a bit of exercise.

Smart driving saves lives and the environment

  • Inflate your tyres to the correct pressure this can save up to 5% on your fuel bill.
  • Remove unnecessary material from the boot or roof of your car, they make you use more fuel.
  • Breaking and accelerating sharply uses more fuel and is dangerous driving.
  • Make sure you are driving in an appropriate gear. Driving in a lower gear at a high speed uses more fuel.
  • Park in the shade if possible - sun on a hot engine increases emissions causing a smog that can trigger respiratory problems.
  • Try car sharing - Is there anyone in your office that lives near you? Could you take turns with a neighbour to do the school run?
  • Think about how and where you use your car. If you mainly drive in a city do you need a large, fast car. Why not try a smaller car with a lower cc it will cost you less to insure and drive and is safer then driving around in a huge SUV.
  • Make sure you get your car serviced regularly - every 6 months if it is an old car - this will make sure your car is running efficiently.
